In October Phoenix’s most versatile arts space, The Paper Heart, announced they would be closing at the end of 2006. What happened next took the owner of gallery, Scott Sanders, by surprise. Dozens of people contacted him, asking what they could do to help keep The Paper Heart open. “I understand why there has been such a outcry,” says Richard Bledsoe, one of The Paper Heart’s studio artists. “No other venue in Phoenix offers such a multimedia combination of working studios, art gallery, and large performance space. Add the fact Scott has been so supportive of developing artists and performers, and the downtown in general, we want to give something back.”

In response to the public reaction, a fund raising benefit has been announced for Saturday November 11, an all day event running from 1pm to 2am. The event is going to feature the eclectic mix that is the spirit of The Paper Heart: music, dance, poetry, performance art, magic and freak show. There will also be a raffle and a silent art auction. Admission is $10 at the door, proceeds to benefit The Paper Heart, and other fundraising activities will take place - here are some of what you can expect;

  • VIP Seating - $200, includes admission and reserved couch seating for the evening events with a bottle of wine and appetizers for up to 4 people.

  • Silent Auction: Tuesday night ‘PAINT’ artists work and a few other big items.

  • Live Auction.

    Fatigo
    Many have attempted to describe Phoenix, Arizona’s Fatigo, one of the first bands to ever play at The Paper Heart when it was located at 5th Avenue and Van Buren 5 years ago. Of the band: oddball, clever, strange, oddball auteur, absurdist, irrepressible, and, finally, supremely oddball. Of the music: lo-fi, Latin, lounge, pop, folky, jazzy, cumbia, tejano, norteño, mariachi, bossa nova, and not-quite-rock/not-quite-ordinary…to name a few. "My dad would always have music going in the house”, Montoya (singer) explains. "Whether we were pulling weeds or having a first communion party...it was always a mixture of Beatles, Mariachi Vargas, Trio Los Panchos , and Motown…of course I was always trying to sneak my Depeche Mode cassettes in there…Yeah, so I’d have to say my dad is my biggest influence.” From subterranean dive bars in the Downtown Phoenix Arts district, to larger venues throughout the Valley of the Sun and beyond, Fatigo brings a multicultural concoction to the table . Smell it, drink it, love it, pass it on.

    Jeff Falk - the performance artist
    Involved in the downtown Phoenix art scene since the early to mid eighties, Jeff Falk is one of few still involved in creating performance art. The only caucasian in this group of latino made artists. The artspace was on the forefront of the emerging downtown art scene. Unfortunately funds ran out and they had to close doors in 2003. MARS Artspace and its artists can still be seen today at www.mars-artspace.org and showing in many of the local galleries.

    Jeff was also one of the founders of the well known "Bad X-Mas Pageant" that occurs on the 1st Saturday every December. This event has been in existence now for over 20 years! Every year people get the opportunity to come down and be entertained by the likes of "A Star Trek Christmas", consumer test products, "Bad Santa" and Steve Gompf's "Rudolph the Tourette's Syndrome Reindeer"

    "Gone are the big hair,the tassels,pasties and G-string; well for me anyway. What I would like to do is take you into the world of Burlesque, the place I called home for the better part of my life. Those of us in the business are not sure of who the real mother of the striptease was. Some stand on the fact that shedding clothes is woman's oldest and most seductive act. That the earliest strip was performed by Salome as she danced and removed her veils for King Herod or Eve, who if you look at it just right, did a reverse strip. But in our history there have been many woman who have taken the act of disrobing and turned it into a beautiful art form. It's to these ladies that we owe our sincere gratitude and appreciation, for without them I would have not been allowed to attain the status and the acclaim that I knew for many years. What follows will be my life from my early days to those not so far removed. Enjoy your journey into the life and times of this Diva of Ecdysiasts, Satan's Angel ... The Devil's own Mistress..."

Founded by the Dr. Reverend Stephen D. F. Strange, the circus embraces a variety of talent that resurrects the spirit of vaudeville updated for a cynical, multicultural world. Bawdy and elegant, shocking and humorous, beautiful and sublime might describe the show but that would be rhetorical tetherball—and not really saying anything at all.

    Three years later Ron moved out to Tempe, Arizona to start Modest Proposal with Ryan. In the two years since, the two have published five issues of the award-winning Modest Proposal Magazine, produced dozens of comedic short films, become regulars at the Tempe Impov, and performed across the country with a number of well-known comics.The third Saturday of every month, Ron & Ryan present the Modest Proposal Show at The Paper Heart. • 9:30PM - 10:00PM
    Lolita Haze - The Nymphet of Burlesque
    History was Lolita Haze's favorite subject in school. It is from this love of history, particularly, the 1940's, 1950's that gives this Nymphet her classical show style. Studying films, art, and society from this era, Lolita has the glamour and allure of the dames of the silver screen, the innocence and pep of the American pin-up, and she still has the manners of the perfect lady.

    With guidance from many living legends of Burlesque's past, Lolita has grown as a classical Burlesque Strip teaser. Each one of her acts varies from one to the next. Many times she is playful and bubbly and other times she is sensual and exotic. One thing is for sure, every act is classical, titillating, intriguing, and entertaining! Currently performing in Arizona, Lolita delights in bringing this naughty but nice world of yesteryear to the attention of many unfamiliar with Burlesque. She has performed for traveling bands, at fetish shows, car shows, art galleries, and performed with living legend, Satan's Angel in the play Have Tassels Will Travel based on the Burlesque life of CeCe Walker.
